Five Rainbows Cataloging Services is an American-owned company based in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Founded in 2007, for over a decade we’ve offered PCIP data and MARC record cataloging to independent authors and publishers not eligible for the Library of Congress CIP Program. For a decade, we’ve served the unique needs of our clients and have been gratified to see so many returning to us again and again.
We strive to stay up to date on the latest developments in cataloging, including the RDA: Resource Description & Access standard and the Library of Congress guidelines for formatting CIP data, as well as the new BIBFRAME standard and linked data movement, both still in development. Our MARC records are 100% valid, clean records accepted for upload to both the WorldCat and SkyRiver catalogs.
Aside from our dedication to top-notch cataloging, we’re also renowned for our selection of affordable options to fill each client’s specific needs. Keeping our prices competitive and our services up to date is a matter of pride for us.
We keep up with the latest developments in library cataloging to provide the best service possible.
We have wide-ranging expertise and interests, which enhances our cataloging of each and every book.
Every book is cataloged by a librarian with a master’s degree in library science and extensive experience.
In January 2007, Lisa A. Shiel and her father, Walt Shiel, founded Five Rainbows Services for Authors & Publishers to serve the unique needs of indie authors and publishers. Originally, the company provided a variety of publishing-related services, including editing and book design, along with PCIP data. As Five Rainbows grew, our cataloging services became the most popular offerings on our website.
In 2012, the company signed a contract with OCLC to become a vendor partner, uploading MARC records to the OCLC system and WorldCat. Three years later, we reached a similar agreement with SkyRiver.
More changes came, as we began to eliminate many of our non-cataloging services. Then in 2013, Walt was diagnosed with prostate cancer and began a personal journey to research treatment options, becoming a mentor to other men suffering from the same disease. He pulled back from Five Rainbows in a gradual turn toward retirement. Lisa took charge of the company in 2015, though Walt remained a partner in the business, and the scaling back of service offerings already underway continued.
By 2016, Walt’s cancer was in remission, but he passed away suddenly in February of that year. In the wake of his passing, Five Rainbows underwent a major reorganization as its parent company, Slipdown Mountain Publications, was dissolved. Lisa now runs the company as Five Rainbows Cataloging Services and the business focuses exclusively on cataloging, in the form of PCIP data and MARC records.
Meet Lisa A. Shiel
Born in Texas, Lisa A. Shiel has lived all over the United States, from Alaska to Mississippi and California to Michigan. She earned her master’s in library science from the University of North Texas, completing her program of study in just eleven months with a perfect GPA. Her capstone project, created for the Tarrant County Law Library in Fort Worth, was selected as an excellent example for future students.
Her graduate-level training in all aspects of librarianship prepared her for a career in both public and special libraries, including a stint at the corporate research library of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics headquarters in Fort Worth. While there, she cataloged over 500 NASA technical reports in the span of three months.
Since founding Five Rainbows with her late father, Lisa has employed her multi-faceted academic background and wide-ranging interests in managing the cataloging of her clients’ wonderfully diverse books. With an associate degree in music and a bachelor’s in general studies — with concentrations in business, English, and music — Lisa is uniquely qualified to helm a company like Five Rainbows. Add in her many and varied personal interests, including ancient history and science, and it’s easy to see why Five Rainbows is trusted by so many clients.
Lisa also understands the specific needs of authors and publishers, thanks to her long-standing avocation as a writer. She has penned quirky nonfiction and paranormal adventure fiction under her own name; as Anna Durand, she creates distinctive romance novels that have become award-winners and bestsellers, beloved by fans for their heart and humor.
